Cooler weather is hitting Wisconsin, and that means the leaves are changing colors and it’s time to think about taking a color tour. Wisconsin has some of the most beautiful forested land in the country, and if you live in the state or one of the surrounding states, you know that you don’t want to put that trip off for too long or you’ll be out of luck. There’s something else you don’t want to put off for too long, and that’s getting your chimney inspected, cleaned and serviced. Winter tends to follow fall quite quickly when you get into the northern states, and Wisconsin is definitely no exception! So before you plan that trip to see the beautiful autumn colors, give Chimney Concepts a call and set up an appointment to have your chimney taken care of. Not only will this ensure that you don’t have to wait weeks to get onto our fall schedule, it also means that you won’t have to worry about dangerous creosote buildup or unfixed repairs when snow flies and you want to use your fireplace.
Cleaning
One of the most important reasons to have your chimney inspected and cleaned is because, if you used your fireplace at all last year, you probably have a pretty good build up of creosote lining the interior of your chimney. Creosote is what gets left behind as smoke flows through your chimney and condenses near the top. It is dirty, it is smelly, but most importantly, it is highly flammable. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), even as little as an eighth of an inch of build up can lead to a dangerous chimney fire if a spark catches.
Repairs
We’ll also be looking for areas that need repair. Over the course of a winter of use, your chimney takes a lot of abuse, and there may be cracks in the chimney liner that need to be repaired. If cracks are left unrepaired, dangerous chemicals in the smoke might be leaking back into your home, and that could cause serious health issues for your family and pets. Your dampers are another area that may need attention. If they are rusty, you may not be getting a good seal, which means that cold air might be leaking back into your home when your fireplace isn’t in use and smoke may not be leaving as efficiently as it should be when your fireplace is in use. We’ll look for cracks in the mortar as well, and also for any problems with the chimney crown or the chimney cap. If your flashing is rusted, torn, or loose, we’ll take care of that, too. We’ll also check for water leaks and take care of any areas where these leaks might be occurring.
