Is HeatShield Chimney Relining Right for Me?

Let’s talk about chimney relining. Why is it important?

A strong and properly installed or built chimney liner is crucial because it ensures the safe and efficient operation of your chimney. Liners protect your home from heat, sparks, and dangerous gases, and they help to prevent potential fires and carbon monoxide poisoning too. They also improve draft and work hard to extend the life of the chimney by preventing damage from creosote buildup and moisture.

Now, let’s talk about relining options… If your current liner needs replacing, you could always have us install a brand new stainless steel liner, which is a solid and effective solution. That said, some wonder if there’s a more affordable way to get the job done. Cue: HeatShield Resurfacing.

HeatShield is a chimney flue repair system that was first developed in Europe a few decades ago. A unique combination of ceramic and refractory materials, the sealant was created as a way to resurface terra cotta clay chimney liners that were otherwise structurally sound. While this repair solution will not work in every chimney system with a clay liner, there are different methods of application depending on the extent of the damage to the liner – and we’d love the chance to set you up with something suitable to your needs.

If you’re a homeowner in the Milwaukee area and you’re looking to get your chimney relined or restored with HeatShield, give us a call with any questions. We’d be happy to help!

What Are the Different HeatShield Application Methods?

With HeatShield, you have three different options:

  • Joint Repair: Utilizing an applicator created to the exact dimensions of your flue, we go in with a pulley system and apply the HeatShield material over the existing mortar joints to fill, reinforce, strengthen, and seal any gaps or imperfections between every tile.
  • Resurfacing: Using the same dimension-specific applicator and pulley system, we first prep the inside of the flue with a material meant to prime for the HeatShield as well as remove any remaining dust or debris. After that dries, we go in with the specially formulated “Cerfractory” material – but, rather than only applying it to the mortar joints, we coat the entire inside of the flue liner.
  • CeCure Sleeve Relining: If your system is suffering from extensive damage, you might be a candidate for the most intensive HeatShield repair method. We prepare a custom-made, thin, ceramic-insulated, stainless steel-enforced sleeve coated with sealant on both sides that is inserted in your chimney before being coated one final time with the HeatShield Cerfractory material.

What Are the Benefits of a Stainless Steel Chimney Liner?

Sometimes, HeatShield is, unfortunately, not an option. The good news is that, while a bit more expensive, stainless steel liners are a solid alternative that will last and give you decades of reliable protection.

A stainless steel chimney liner offers several benefits for homeowners – here’s a breakdown:

  • Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, which is essential for withstanding the acidic byproducts of combustion.
  • Heat Resistance: Stainless steel can endure the high temperatures associated with fireplaces and stoves, making it a long-lasting option that doesn’t degrade quickly.
  • Improved Efficiency: A properly sized and installed stainless steel liner can improve the draft of the chimney, helping your appliance operate more efficiently – and potentially reducing your home energy costs.
  • Suitable for Various Fuels: Stainless steel liners can be used with a wide range of fuels, including wood, oil, and gas. This versatility makes them a popular choice for different types of heating appliances.
  • Easy Installation: Flexible stainless steel liners are easy to install in chimneys that may be offset or have bends, making them a practical solution for many homes and flue types.
  • Low Upkeep: Stainless steel liners require minimal maintenance over their lifespan, making them a convenient choice for homeowners – they make our lives easier too!

All in all, although stainless steel liners may have a higher upfront cost compared to other materials, their durability, performance, and low maintenance requirements can lead to significant long-term savings.

In addition, our stainless steel liners come with a lifetime warranty – which makes peace of mind a guarantee.
